Gold EA Spread and Slippage: Measuring XAUUSD Trading Costs
Gold EA spread and slippage can change the outcome of a short-term XAUUSD strategy even when its entry signals remain identical. A useful evaluation separates the quoted spread, the price actually filled and the account’s other charges. Looking only at the broker’s lowest advertised spread misses that distinction.
Separate the components of trading cost
The spread is the difference between the quoted bid and ask. Slippage is the difference between a relevant requested or reference price and the executed price; it can be favorable or unfavorable. Commission and overnight financing are separate charges. MT5 supports different execution modes, so order handling and permitted price behavior depend on the instrument and broker configuration. See MetaQuotes’ trade execution documentation.
Do not calculate cost by blindly adding a full spread to every entry and exit. If a trade report already uses actual bid/ask fills, the spread is reflected in those prices. Add only charges or adjustments that are not already included. Double-counting can make a workable comparison misleading.
Create an execution log
For each demo observation, record the symbol, server time, order type, volume, reference price, fill price, spread at submission and commission. Also note whether the EA accepted the signal, skipped it because of a filter or encountered a rejected order. The log should distinguish missed opportunities from failed execution.
A simple hypothetical comparison illustrates why units matter: two quotes with spreads of 0.20 and 0.50 differ by 0.30 in price. That is not automatically a 0.30 account-currency charge. Translate the difference using the actual instrument and volume before comparing it with a strategy’s typical trade outcome.
Evaluate a spread filter without overfitting it
- Confirm whether the EA’s threshold is expressed in points, price units or another measure.
- Observe spreads during the sessions the strategy actually trades.
- Separate ordinary periods from news, daily breaks and unusually thin conditions.
- Compare several reasonable thresholds using the same testing period and cost assumptions.
- Check whether a tighter threshold avoids costly fills or mostly removes valid signals.
The Scalping Robot Pro MT5 product page lists configurable sessions and spread filters. Its presence is a reason to inspect those inputs, not evidence that any particular threshold will be profitable.
What a demo comparison can and cannot show
A demo log can reveal unit mistakes, rejected orders and patterns in quoted spreads. It cannot establish that a live account will receive identical fills. Broker infrastructure, liquidity and account execution may differ. Keep historical simulation, demo observations and any live records clearly separated.
Compare software requirements in the MT5 Expert Advisors collection, then use the Gold EA backtesting guide for broader strategy testing. There is no universal best spread setting. The aim is a repeatable cost assessment, with no assumption that automation removes trading losses.
