BYO-Bot Review: Build, Test and Export Your Own MT5 EA
BYO-Bot is Windows software for assembling a gold-trading strategy visually, testing it with local XAUUSD data, and exporting editable MQ5 source code for MetaTrader 5.

Watch the Full BYO-Bot Walkthrough
This step-by-step video covers the complete workflow: installing the data pack, selecting a template, editing strategy modules, running the visual test, exporting the MQ5 file and compiling it in MetaEditor 5.
Quick Verdict
Purpose
Visual strategy builder for creating MT5 Expert Advisors.
Platform
Windows desktop software; exported bots run in MetaTrader 5.
Workflow
Choose a template, customize it, test it, then export source code.
Output
MQ5 source code plus a SET file containing the tested settings.
Main Strength
Turns modular trading rules into readable, editable MT5 code without manual coding.
Main Limitation
The current release targets MT5 and XAUUSD; built-in tests are estimates, not live results.
BYO-Bot v3.4.2 Review Summary
BYO-Bot is not a single locked trading robot. It is a builder that lets you combine lot sizing, an entry signal, up to three confirmation filters, trade management, exit rules and two protection slots. You can begin with a supplied template or start from scratch, change the modules and parameters, then compare ideas with the local visual tester.
Once a configuration passes a visual test, the export step becomes available. A licensed user can name the bot, assign a version and magic number, add a trade comment, and export both the MQ5 source and SET settings. The MQ5 file can then be opened in MetaEditor 5 and compiled into an EX5 Expert Advisor for MetaTrader 5.
How BYO-Bot Works
The program separates strategy creation into four visible stages. This keeps the workflow understandable: choose a starting structure, configure the rules, test the current setup, and only then generate the MT5 source files.
1. Choose a Template
Select a supplied structure—such as Aurora, NorthStar, Crystal Edge, Gold Matrix Safe 5 or Solaris—or start from scratch. Templates are starting points, not proof that a strategy will remain profitable.
2. Customize the Rules
Choose fixed or risk-based lot sizing, an entry signal and timeframe, up to three confirmation filters, single-trade or basket management, exit logic and protection modules.
3. Test the Current Bot
Run the local visual test and review net profit, ending balance, maximum drawdown, trades, win rate, profit factor and the balance curve. Any strategy change requires a fresh successful test.
4. Export to MT5
Enter the bot details and export MQ5 source code plus the matching SET file. Compile the MQ5 file in MetaEditor 5 to create the EX5 trading program used by MetaTrader 5.

Strategy Modules and Risk Controls
Lot Size Selection
Choose how position size is calculated. Available settings depend on the selected module and can be edited below the main selector.
Entry Signal and Timeframe
Select the primary entry method and the timeframe on which that signal is evaluated.
Three Confirmation Slots
Add up to three optional filters. Each slot can use its own selectable signal and timeframe, with the chosen filters combined by the displayed logic.
Trade Management
Choose single-trade management or a basket-style approach. This decision changes which exit and recovery settings become relevant.
Exit Rules
Single-trade management exposes several exit styles, while basket modes can use collective targets or recovery-oriented rules.
Two Protection Slots
Add independent safeguards from the available protection modules, then edit their detailed values in the settings area underneath.

Five MT5 Strategy Test Demonstrations
The screenshots below demonstrate that different BYO-Bot configurations can be exported, compiled and tested in MetaTrader 5. They are not a controlled ranking of templates: although every report shows XAUUSD on H1 with a $1,000 initial deposit, the date ranges and trade counts differ substantially. The SAR custom build covers only 1–25 September 2026, while Crystal Edge and Gold Matrix span much longer periods. Raw profit should therefore not be compared without considering time, exposure, market conditions and data quality.
| Demonstration | Test Range | Net Profit | Relative Equity DD | Profit Factor | Win Rate | Trades |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Aurora Template | 2 Jan–21 Sep 2026 | $2,860.80 | 9.53% | 7.89 | 88.99% | 1,026 |
| SAR Custom Build | 1–25 Sep 2026 | $2,806.01 | 7.99% | 4.64 | 88.70% | 1,955 |
| Solaris Template | 2 Jan–21 Sep 2026 | $651.34 | 0.32% | 15.76 | 77.99% | 418 |
| Crystal Edge | 2 Jan 2025–1 Sep 2026 | $235.81 | 3.18% | 7.60 | 93.79% | 161 |
| Gold Matrix | 21 Jan 2025–8 Sep 2026 | $910.34 | 7.86% | 5.21 | 83.13% | 403 |
Aurora Template Example
The Aurora report records $2,860.80 net profit, a 7.89 profit factor, 88.99% winning trades and 1,026 trades. Relative equity drawdown is 9.53%, and the recovery factor is 8.93. The balance curve rises consistently across the displayed period, but several equity dips show why floating drawdown deserves as much attention as closed-balance growth.

SAR Custom-Build Example
This “SAR reversal from scratch” report is useful because it shows a custom configuration rather than a named template. It records $2,806.01 net profit, a 4.64 profit factor, 88.70% winning trades, 1,955 trades and 7.99% relative equity drawdown. Its recovery factor is 17.67. However, the chart covers only 25 days, so the large trade count and profit cannot be compared directly with the longer tests.

Solaris Template Example
Solaris produces the lowest displayed drawdown: $651.34 net profit, 0.32% relative equity drawdown, a 15.76 profit factor, 77.99% winning trades and 418 trades. The recovery factor is 196.78. The curve is comparatively smooth, but extremely strong ratios still require verification with realistic trading costs and different broker data.

Crystal Edge Template Example
Crystal Edge spans approximately twenty months and records $235.81 net profit, 3.18% relative equity drawdown, a 7.60 profit factor, 93.79% winning trades and 161 trades. Its recovery factor is 7.31. The lower trading frequency and longer window make this example structurally different from Aurora and the short SAR run.

Gold Matrix Template Example
Gold Matrix records $910.34 net profit, 7.86% relative equity drawdown, a 5.21 profit factor, 83.13% winning trades and 403 trades. Its recovery factor is 7.60. The equity curve contains more visible intratest dips than Solaris, which is a useful reminder that similar ending profits can conceal very different paths and exposure profiles.

Installation, Trial Mode and MT5 Export
BYO-Bot v3.4.2 is supplied as a Windows ZIP package. Extract it before running the application and keep the executable beside the StarterData folder. At first launch, choose either license activation or trial mode. The trial lets you explore the complete builder and local-test workflow, but source export is limited to the fixed Gold Matrix Safe 5 sample. A full personal license unlocks export for the strategy you configured and is licensed for one Windows computer at a time.
Recommended Environment
- A current Windows computer with internet access for license checks.
- MetaTrader 5 and MetaEditor 5 for compiling and validating exported source code.
- Independent broker data and realistic costs for final Strategy Tester verification.
First Steps
- Download and extract the ZIP package, then run BYO-Bot-v3.4.2.exe.
- Install the included XAUUSD starter data and confirm all eight timeframes show READY.
- Choose a template or start from scratch, customize it, test it and export after a successful result.

Pros
- Clear four-stage workflow for building, testing and exporting.
- Templates provide practical starting structures while modules remain configurable.
- Exports editable MQ5 source code and the matching SET file.
- Free trial demonstrates the builder before purchase.
Cons
- Current release is limited to Windows, MT5 and XAUUSD-focused workflows.
- The local tester omits historical spread and uses synthetic volume.
- Exported EAs still require compilation and independent MT5 testing.
- A personal license is intended for one Windows computer at a time.
Who Is BYO-Bot Best For?
BYO-Bot is best suited to MT5 gold traders who understand trading rules but do not want to hand-code an Expert Advisor from the beginning. It is also useful for strategy researchers who want to compare modular combinations quickly, then inspect or extend the resulting MQ5 code. The best user will treat templates and visual-test results as starting evidence, not finished proof.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does BYO-Bot require coding?
You can build and test a strategy through the graphical interface without writing code. BYO-Bot exports MQ5 source, but you still need MetaEditor 5 to compile it into an EX5 Expert Advisor. Coding knowledge is optional for basic use and helpful if you want to inspect or extend the exported source.
What can I do in the free trial?
The trial provides access to the builder and local visual-test workflow so you can explore templates and settings. Source export is restricted to a fixed Gold Matrix Safe 5 sample. Exporting your own configured strategy requires a full license.
Is the built-in visual test the same as an MT5 backtest?
No. It is a local estimate for comparing ideas while building. The bundled data has no historical spread and uses synthetic minute-count volume. Compile the EA and run it in the MT5 Strategy Tester with realistic broker conditions before relying on the result.
What files does BYO-Bot export?
It exports an MQ5 source-code file for the Expert Advisor and a SET file containing the tested configuration. Open the MQ5 file in MetaEditor 5, click Compile, confirm zero errors, then test the resulting EX5 in MetaTrader 5.
Final Verdict
BYO-Bot’s main value is control. Instead of buying a black-box EA with fixed logic, you can see the strategy structure, change the components, compare settings and keep the generated source code. The templates shorten the learning curve, while the start-from-scratch option gives more experienced users a route to custom combinations.
That flexibility does not remove trading risk. A smooth historical curve can be affected by omitted costs, data differences, overfitting and future market changes. Used as a structured research and code-generation tool—with careful MT5 verification—BYO-Bot offers a practical bridge between a strategy idea and a compilable Expert Advisor.
